How to Use AI for Writing Without Producing Generic Content
There is something interesting happening on the internet. More people are writing than ever before, but a lot of the articles are beginning to sound the same.
You can search for a topic, open five different articles and discover that they make almost the same points, use similar examples and even follow the same pattern. The grammar may be perfect, but after reading everything, you may still wonder what you actually learned.
AI is partly responsible for this change. A writer can now ask ChatGPT or another AI tool to produce an article within seconds, which is useful when you know how to use it properly.
The problem starts when the writer simply publishes whatever the AI produces.
If thousands of people ask AI to write about the same topic and publish the answers with only minor changes, the internet will naturally become filled with content that feels repetitive.
The solution is not to stop using AI. The better approach is to use AI as a writing assistant rather than allowing it to do all the thinking for you.
1. Start with your own ideas and experience
One of the easiest ways to make AI assisted writing more original is to give it something that actually came from you.
For example, suppose you want to write about starting a small food business in Nigeria. You can ask AI for ideas, but the article becomes much more useful if you also include something you have observed from a real food seller.
Perhaps a woman selling food near an office discovered that she was wasting money by preparing too much food every morning. She eventually started collecting orders through WhatsApp before cooking, which helped her reduce waste.
That small detail is more valuable than another general statement about “understanding your customers.”
AI can help you organise the story and explain the lesson, but the observation came from real life.
2. Do not ask AI to do everything
Instead of telling AI, “Write an article about making money online,” start by writing down what you already know about the subject.
Maybe you have noticed that many people are interested in remote work but struggle to find their first client. Maybe you have spoken to people who paid for online courses but still could not find work afterwards.
These observations give your article a point of view.
Give those ideas to AI and ask it to help you organise them, identify gaps or suggest questions you should answer. You remain responsible for the substance while AI helps you work faster.
3. Write the way people actually talk
Not every article needs to sound like a corporate report.
Compare these two statements:
“Effective financial management is essential for the long term sustainability of small businesses.”
Or:
“A small business can be making sales every day and still run out of money. The owner may be looking at how much is coming in without paying enough attention to what is going out.”
The second version is easier to understand because it sounds like someone explaining a real problem to another person.
Good writing does not have to use complicated words to sound intelligent.
4. Add details that are specific to your audience
Generic articles often happen because the writer is trying to write for everybody.
If you are writing about making money with AI, who are you actually talking to?
A Nigerian graduate looking for work has different concerns from a small business owner. A freelance writer also has different needs from a teacher or social media manager.
For an African freelancer, internet costs, payment methods, finding international clients and competition may be important. A small business owner may care more about creating advertisements, answering customers and finding new buyers.
The more clearly you understand your reader, the easier it becomes to produce useful content.
5. Use real people and ordinary experiences
You do not need a dramatic story for an article to feel human.
Talk to a business owner about how they started. Ask a farmer what has become more expensive. Ask a worker what takes up most of their salary. Ask a retailer what customers complain about.
You do not need to conduct a major research study every time you write.
Sometimes three short conversations can give you more original material than asking AI to generate fifty ideas. You can then use AI to organise your notes and turn them into a clear article.
6. Let AI help you find what you have missed
AI can be very useful after you have already done your own thinking.
Suppose you are writing about starting a cleaning business. You may already know about equipment, transportation, pricing and finding customers.
Ask AI what problems a beginner might overlook.
It may remind you about damaged property, customer complaints, unreliable workers, cleaning chemicals, agreements with customers and repeat business.
You can then decide which points are actually relevant.
That is a much better use of AI than allowing it to invent the entire article.
7. Be honest about the difficult parts
A lot of generic online content focuses heavily on the benefits of something and barely discusses the problems.
An article about starting a business may talk about potential income without mentioning unsold stock, transportation costs, difficult customers, competition or periods when sales are poor.
Real businesses do not work that way.
If you are writing about freelancing, for example, do not make it sound as though AI has made earning money online easy. AI can help a freelancer produce work faster, but finding clients and building trust can still be difficult.
Readers appreciate honesty because they are dealing with these problems in real life.
8. Never allow AI to invent your experience
This is particularly important for review articles, personal stories and advice based on experience.
If you have never run a restaurant, do not allow AI to write as though you personally discovered a successful restaurant strategy.
If you have never used a product, do not pretend that you have.
And if you have not interviewed somebody, do not create a fictional quotation and present it as a real person’s words.
AI can produce convincing sentences, but convincing sentences do not turn an invented experience into a real one.
9. Use real numbers when they are important
Generic articles often say things like, “This business can make good money.”
That does not help the reader very much.
If you have reliable figures, explain the calculation instead. For example, if you are discussing a food business, you can show how the owner might calculate ingredients, packaging, transportation and other expenses before deciding on a selling price.
The figures may vary from one city or business to another, so make that clear.
A simple realistic calculation is usually more useful than a paragraph promising that someone can become financially successful.
10. Do not accept every popular piece of advice
AI often repeats advice that is already common online.
For example, you may hear that every small business must be active on social media.
But that is not necessarily true for every business.
A mechanic may get most of his customers through referrals and his location. A restaurant may depend heavily on repeat customers and WhatsApp, while a fashion business may rely more on Instagram and TikTok.
The better question is not, “Which platform should every business use?”
Ask, “Where do my customers actually look for what I am selling?”
That question produces a much more useful article.
11. Use AI for the boring parts of writing
There are many writing tasks that do not require much creativity.
AI can help organise your notes, suggest titles, create an outline, identify repetition, improve awkward sentences and turn interview notes into a clearer structure.
It can also help you identify areas of an article that need more explanation.
There is nothing wrong with using AI for these tasks. The important thing is what you do with the time you save.
Use that extra time to research, interview people, check facts and add useful information instead of simply producing more articles.
12. Always check important information
AI can provide information that sounds convincing but is outdated or wrong.
This is especially important when writing about money, healthcare, law, immigration, scholarships, government programmes and current events.
If a claim could influence someone’s decision, verify it.
Check reliable sources, look at dates and, when discussing statistics, try to find the original source. AI can help you understand information, but it should not replace fact checking.
13. Give readers something they cannot get from a basic AI prompt
This is probably the simplest test for any AI assisted article.
Before publishing, ask yourself: “What have I added here that required me to actually think?”
Maybe it is a conversation you had with a business owner. Maybe it is a local example, an original comparison, a useful calculation or an observation from your own experience.
There should be something that gives the reader a reason to read your article instead of another ge
